Happy National Dog Day

How to Celebrate the day....

National Dog Day is partly a celebration and partly a reminder. It recognizes companion dogs, service and working dogs, rescue dogs, and dogs waiting for adoption. It also encourages people to think about what responsible care looks like throughout a dog’s life.

That makes the day a good time to ask a few practical questions:

  • Is my dog getting an appropriate amount of movement and mental stimulation?
  • Are the contact details on the ID tag and microchip registration current?
  • Does my dog’s collar or harness still fit properly?
  • Have there been recent changes in appetite, sleep, activity, or behavior?
  • Is there a local shelter or rescue group I can support responsibly?

Celebrating your dog can be joyful while still making life safer and healthier.

Support a Shelter or Rescue Group

National Dog Day’s adoption mission makes shelter support especially relevant. You can donate requested supplies, contribute to a medical fund, volunteer, foster through an established organization, or share accurate information about an adoptable dog.

Ask the organization what it currently needs before purchasing supplies. Cash donations can sometimes be more flexible than items, while wish lists help prevent shelters from receiving products they cannot use.

The ASPCA’s 2025 shelter statistics report that approximately 2 million dogs were adopted in the United States that year, while many shelters continued to face capacity, staffing, medical, and behavioral-care challenges

Make Quiet Time Part of the Celebration

Not every dog wants a party, a dog park, or a busy outing. Puppies may become overstimulated, senior dogs may tire quickly, and fearful or reactive dogs may prefer a predictable routine.

A calm celebration can include sitting together in the yard, offering a familiar chew under supervision, brushing your dog if they enjoy it, or taking a quiet one-on-one walk. The best National Dog Day plan is the one your dog actually enjoys.

Plan a Sniff-First Walk

A celebration walk does not have to be longer or faster than usual. For many dogs, being allowed to stop and investigate smells is more interesting than covering an extra mile. Visit a familiar park at a quieter time, take a different block through the neighborhood, or let your dog set a comfortable pace.

Adjust the walk for weather, age, fitness, health, and breed characteristics. The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends starting with shorter walks and taking breaks as needed.

Treat time to Beat the Heat

Frozen Apple Yogurt Bites
This one’s great for both dogs and cats and only requires two ingredients:

  • 2 apples, chopped (with seeds and core removed)

  • 1 cup nonfat Greek yogurt

  • A splash of water

Toss the apples and water into a blender and blend until smooth. Mix in the yogurt, then pour the mixture into an ice cube tray. Freeze for 3–4 hours, and you’ll have a refreshing treat ready to go.
