At Home with Dot

Welcome today to my blog and Dot is sharing with us about Rex our neighbors Ginger cat. Who likes to come over and sleep on the fence or roof of my car.

September 1 was National Ginger cat  appreciation day..

Because ginger cats are not a distinct breed, it’s difficult to make generalizations about their personalities and temperaments. That being said, all ginger cats do share one key characteristic, aside from their orange coloration: they are tabby cats. The term “tabby” refers to a specific coat pattern that involves a combination of stripes, swirls, or spots of color. This pattern is common in both wild and domestic cats
.In fact, all domestic cats carry the tabby gene, though they might not always visibly exhibit the tabby pattern. Ginger cats, however, always do show the tabby pattern to some extent, whether bold markings or very light ghost striping. All orange tabbies also have a distinctive M-shaped marking on their foreheads.

Covered in a swirling pattern of varying shades of orange, the classic tabby is one of the most recognizable ginger cats. These cats have a bulls-eye pattern on the sides of their bodies, similar in appearance to a marble cake.

  1. The ginger cat is not a distinct breed but a color. Ginger cats come in various hues of red, orange, and cream.
  2. Ginger cats get their orange color from a specific pigment called pheomelanin. This is the same pigment that is responsible for red hair in humans.
  3. All ginger cats are tabbies. All ginger cats display some kind of tabby pattern in their orange coats, but it’s sometimes so light that the cat might appear to be solid orange.
  4. Ginger cats can have either long hair or short hair, depending on their breed or mix.
  5. Certain breeds are more likely to exhibit ginger fur than others. Some of the most common ginger cat breeds are the Abyssinian, Bengal, Maine Coon, and Persian.
  6. The lifespan of an orange kitten is not specific to their coloring. They have the same average lifespan as any cat of the same breed or mix.
  7. Orange cats have a reputation for being friendly and affectionate. Individual temperament is largely determined by the cat’s breed, however.
  8. Roughly 75% to 80% of ginger cats are male. Female ginger cats are less common.

My afternoon read with Dot

Murder, secrets, and a cat who knows too much… A cozy mystery for a cozy evening.

When Clara Whitmore inherits her estranged aunt’s charming bookshop in the cozy small town of Maple Hollow, she plans to settle the estate and leave as quickly as possible. Divorce is still fresh, her life in Portland is waiting, and small-town gossip isn’t her style.

But Maple Hollow has other plans.

Within days of reopening the Maple Leaf Bookshop, Clara discovers a body hidden in her storage room. What looks like a natural death quickly unravels into something far darker—blackmail, long-buried town secrets, and a trail of hidden records that someone is desperate to keep buried.

As suspicion turns toward a respected town matriarch—and whispers begin circling Clara herself—she realizes solving this mystery may be the only way to protect her aunt’s legacy… and her own future in Maple Hollow.

With the help of a loyal diner owner, a steady-handed detective, and Oliver—the imperious orange bookstore cat who seems to uncover clues at suspiciously convenient moments—Clara must untangle decades-old secrets before the truth disappears for good.

Because in Maple Hollow, everyone knows everyone.

And someone is willing to kill to protect the past.
