Legend of the Candy Cane :
The "true legend" of the candy cane is multifaceted, with one prominent story dating to 17th-century Germany, where a choirmaster supposedly bent sugar sticks into a shepherd's staff shape to quiet his choir during Christmas services. Another popular, though debunked, legend claims an Indiana candy maker created the candy with specific symbolism, like the "J" shape for Jesus and stripes representing his blood, but historical evidence shows white and peppermint candy sticks existed centuries earlier. A more historically supported account is that the candy cane's religious symbolism and red stripes were added later, with mass production beginning in the 20th century.
The German choirmaster story
- Around 1670, the choirmaster at the Cologne Cathedral in Germany gave sugar sticks to his choirboys to keep them quiet during the Living Creche ceremony.
- He bent the sugar sticks into the shape of a shepherd's crook, a religious symbol representing a shepherd's staff.
- The candy remained a plain white sugar stick for many years. The red stripes were added later, and the candy was eventually used as a decoration on Christmas trees because the crook could be hung on a branch.
