Johnny Appleseed Day : Book and crafts

 Happy Tuesday and I am celebrating with Apples -- in honor of Johnny Appleseed day I am sharing a great children book, a cute craft and my scrapbook page featuring a recipe for Apple butter....

In this simple yet lively book, preschoolers will be introduced to John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed. Lyrical text and bright, appealing artwork capture the essence of this important American and early conservationist who traveled the country planting apple trees. Little ones will enjoy engaging anecdotes about Johnny Appleseed, beginning with the young John, who liked to walk barefoot in the cool, quiet woods. The Legend:

Johnny Appleseed’s legend begins when John Chapman left the family farm and signed on as an apprentice for an orchardist named Crawford. After that, fact and fiction become intertwined.  There are anecdotal reports of “Johnny Appleseed” appearing here and there over the middle Atlantic states, with key sightings in Pennsylvania. It’s likely that Chapman had combined his love of itinerant travel with his skills as an apple orchardist, and roamed the young United States looking for opportunity, locating landowners interested in planting apple orchards or starting cider mills.

Apple Crafts: 

• Paper plate
• Red construction paper torn into little pieces
• A little brown and green construction paper
• Scissors
• Pencil or crayon
• Glue

Directions:

1. Beforehand cut a little notch in the paper plate to resemble an apple.
2. Spread glue all over the front of the paper plate and cover in the red paper pieces.
3. Cut a little stem from brown paper and glue to the back.
4. Cut a green leaf and glue on the top.
5. Cut a little worm from green paper and glue on the front and draw a smiley face. You could partially cover the worm with red paper to make it look like he’s coming out of a hole.
